Biography
Edward Coley Burne-Jones was a British artist and designer born in Birmingham in 1833. He studied theology at Oxford University but abandoned it to pursue art. Burne-Jones was a key figure in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which aimed to revive the art of the early Italian Renaissance. He was heavily influenced by medieval art and literature, and his works often featured mythical and allegorical themes. Burne-Jones was also a prolific designer, creating stained glass windows, tapestries, and furniture. He collaborated with William Morris on many projects, including the decoration of the Red House in Bexleyheath. Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894 and continued to work until his death in 1898. His legacy includes some of the most iconic works of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, such as "The Beguiling of Merlin" and "The Golden Stairs."
