Biography
Gwen John was a Welsh artist born in 1876. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and later moved to Paris, where she became associated with the Post-Impressionist movement. John is best known for her portraits and still life paintings, which often feature muted colors and a sense of introspection. She was also a skilled draftsman and produced a number of drawings throughout her career. John's personal life was marked by a series of tumultuous relationships, including a long-term affair with the sculptor Auguste Rodin. She died in 1939 at the age of 63, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated for its sensitivity and emotional depth.
