Guy Beggs was born in Durban, South Africa. He studied fine art at Maidstone College of Art, The Royal Academy Schools, and Goldsmiths College, London. He taught at Wimbledon School of Art and the Sir John Cass School of Art where he became head of fine art and then dean of the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media and Design. He was the founder and director of Metropolitan Works Creative Industries Centre at London Metropolitan University. He lives and works in London and Brighton & Hove. Guy Beggs uses landscape as a starting point for a painting process that explores mark-making, surface, colour and composition. A sense of place, or the compelling nature of a motif, may lead to a descriptive outcome, but his primary concern is always with making a painting rather than with painting a landscape. He has exhibited extensively and his work is located in many private and public collections around the world from Tate Britain and The Museum of London, to Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand and the Lethbridge Gallery, Canada
