Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (b. 1606 d. 1669), more often known as simply Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker and draughtsman. A master in three different disciplines, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest artists in Dutch art history. Rather than following the traditional advice to study in Italy, Rembrandt felt he could learn everything he needed in his home country, the Netherlands. He was greatly influenced by Caravaggio, particularly from the 1630s onwards. His earlier works had a smooth finish, whilst his later pieces used broad brushstrokes or a palette knife.
