Wayne Thiebaud was an American painter born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920. He is best known for his colorful and realistic paintings of everyday objects such as cakes, pies, and hot dogs. Thiebaud studied at the Sacramento State College and later at the San Jose State University. He worked as a commercial artist before becoming a professor of art at the University of California, Davis. Thiebaud's work is often associated with the Pop Art movement, although he has always maintained that he is not a Pop artist. His paintings are characterized by their bright colors, thick paint, and strong shadows. Thiebaud's work has been exhibited in major museums around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He passed away in March 2021 at the age of 101.
