Biography
Leopoldo Metlicovitz was an Italian artist born in Trieste in 1868. He is best known for his iconic poster designs, which helped to establish the Art Nouveau style in Italy. Metlicovitz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna before moving to Milan, where he worked as a graphic designer for various advertising agencies. In 1899, he began working for the Italian publishing house Ricordi, where he created some of his most famous posters, including the iconic image of the singer Carmen Miranda. Metlicovitz's work was characterized by its bold, colorful designs and its use of flowing, organic forms. He was also known for his innovative use of typography, which helped to make his posters stand out from the crowd. Metlicovitz continued to work as a graphic designer until his death in 1944, leaving behind a legacy of iconic poster designs that continue to inspire artists and designers today.
