Albert Bierstadt (b.1830 d.1902) was an American painter associated with the second generation of the Hudson River school. He is known for his grand sweeping landscapes of the American West. In 1863 he travelled to the Pacific Coast where he spent several weeks in Yosemite and the Columbia River. He completed numerous plein air studies he would go on to use for his series of large scale landscape paintings. The works are immense in scale and use luminous lighting to invoke awe for the landscapes.
