MPX5153192: A Hawker Siddleley Harrier GR 1 (Jump Jet), the world's first fixed wing vertical / short take off and landing close support aircraft, landed at St Panras, London, in preparation for the start of the Transatlantic Air Race. Another Harrier would take off from New York in the race. It would be the first time that fixed-wing jet aircraft had operated from the hearts of any city centre. The London-New York leg of the race of over 3000 miles was flown by squadron leader Tom Lecky-Thompson, aged 34.
