Hans Holbein the Younger (b. 1497 d. 1543) was an accomplished portraitist during the 16th century. He was born in Augsburg in southern Germany and he was taught by his father, Hans Holbein the Elder. A large portion of his life was spent in England (1526-8 and 1532-43), where he painted the nobility of the Tudor court, such as his well-known portrait of Henry VIII (currently housed in London at the National Portrait Gallery).
