Biography
Odilon Redon (b.1840-1916) was born in Bordeaux and trained for a brief period with Jean-Léon Gérôme. At the beginning of his career, Redon worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, usually with imaginative and macabre subjects. He then later changed to focus on pastel and oil. Although he is generally seen as a Symbolist painter, Redon never truly associated with the movement. He gained national fame in his life and received the Legion of Honor from the French government in 1903. His work can be considered a precursor to Surrealism.
