ZUM4948603: Jan. 01, 1955 - Tug races to save woman taken from United States Troopship off Southampton: Doctors were today fighting to save a 35 year old woman taken off an American Troopship the” Private William H. Thomas” after a 12 mile dash by tug. The woman Mrs. Doryce Pepper wife of a United States Army Sergeant had collapsed with heart trouble. When the distress call was received a Southamton Tug put to sea to take her from the troopship and 20 miles away Flight Lieut. Joseph Jaffe an R.A.F Doctor raced from the R.A.F Station at Tichfield by car to board the tug. Mrs Pepper was taken to Southampton General Hospital / Bridgeman Images
